Salt water taffy is a sweet treat sold along many coastal towns and beaches. Taffy contains sugar, butter, salt, cornstarch and corn syrup. While it does contain salt, it does not taste salty at all. It also does not contain salt water. The name was actually taken from something that happened in David Bradley’s store in the late 19th century. He was selling taffy, which got soaked in ocean water when a storm caused flooding that inundated his shop. A little girl asked for a taffy and the store owner offered “salt water taffy” for sale instead. Today, these soft and chewy treats are available in different flavors.
